Last Friday was the opening of the ‘Sober Street Art Exhibition’, a group show organized by the Rotterdam-based Sober Collective, showing mural and gallery works by Sebas Velasco, Vesod, Bier&Brood and Kaili Smith.
In addition to the exhibition, the collective launched last week the first edition of Sober Walls, an event that counts with the participation of local and international artists like Sebas Velasco from Spain and the local duo Telmo Miel, who painted this amazing piece in the ‘Oude Noorden’(Old North) area.
Titled “Hit the Lights”, the new mural depicts a young guy siting on the edge of the canvas holding his open back pack between his hands. He looks away from the viewer and inward the picture and towards partially illuminated street, so characteristic of Sebas Velasco’s cityscapes here mixed together with TelmoMiel’s neat painting.
Next in line is Vesod, who recently finished his wall. He, TelmoMiel, Sebas Velasco and Bier & Brood (also from the Netherlands) will be joined by the winner of the Sober Talent Contest. Stay tuned!
The ‘Sober Street Art Exhibition’ runs through April 28th 2017 at the gallery located at Zaagmolendrift 53, Rotterdam.
TELMOMIEL
The Rotterdam-based Dutch duo TelmoMiel, composed of the artists Telmo Pieper and Miel Krutzmann, define themselves as muralists and creators of contemporary art.
In 20017 Telmo, a licensed illustrator and designer, met Miel, who was already active in the graffiti scene, but it wasn’t until 2012 that they started collaborating, after both had completed the their degrees at the Academy of Art.
The two artists work with a photo-realistic style that focuses on contrasts. They work ideas separately, later combining both sketches and giving shape to surrealistic compositions with great attention to detail. They are also so into each others work that when working on a piece together, they are able to switch places when ever wanted or needed.
SEBAS VELASCO
Sebas Velasco started doing graffiti around 2004 defining his creative process while completing a Masters Degree in Painting at the University of País Vasco (UPV/EHU) in Bilbao.
His photographic, expressive brushstroke style reveals a precise academic technique that contrasts sharply with the rawness of the street content in his works. In that sense, many of his canvases act as a window into everyday moments where darkness has become increasingly more important.
Sober Collective is a generic term for multiple companies of the brand Sober. These companies are active in advertisement, art and interior design. With TelmoMiel and Tim Boin Art Sober Collective is complete. Street Art is an easy accessible form of art, which makes it easier to enter the gallery of Sober Collective for the average visitor. TelmoMiel belongs to the top of best Street Artist in the world and in April 2016 they won the price for best Street Artist of the Netherlands in Amsterdam. The goal of Sober Collective is to bring the best Street Artists to Rotterdam and make sure that Rotterdam will have great murals.
